The Xerox Star
The Xerox 6085 Professional Computer System
In 1985 Xerox revamped the Xerox Star. The Xerox 6085, codename Daybreak,
included a faster processor and an improved version of the Star application
software, now called ViewPoint.
The 6085 came with:
-
A faster Star CPU
-
Up to 80 megabytes of hard drive storage
-
Up to 3.7 megabytes of RAM
-
17" or 19" monochrome display
-
Two button optical mouse
-
An ethernet controller
-
A PC emulator card containing an 80186 emulator
-
An optional external 5.25 inch floppy drive
-
An optional external cartridge tape drive.
-
ViewPoint software
Like the 8010 the system had several different incarnations. The "XPIW
Xerox Publishing Illustrator's Workstation" was a Star 6085 but with scanner.
The Star 6085 was also packaged as a "Xerox document center." The Xerox
1186 Artificial Intelligence Workstation was the same hardware as the 6085
but with Interlisp-D instead of the Star software.
ViewPoint greatly improves upon the original star software. Several
visible enhancements include overlapping application windows and smaller
more efficient title bars.
